A Centuries-Old Technique, Made for Today
Shou Sugi Ban originated in Japan some 300 years ago, when fishermen charred boards to help them withstand salty sea air. The charred surface is naturally resistant to moisture, pests and weathering.

Charring
The surface is charred under controlled conditions, forming a protective layer of char.

Depending on the customer's chosen tone, the timber is brushed lighter or deeper, revealing its grain and texture.

A stain or oil gives the board its tone and adds extra protection.
